Where do you find bluegill is a common question asked among first time fly fishermen. I would say mainly in lakes or large rivers you would find the most bluegill. They enjoy structure changes. A good boulder or a large stationary log are all great locations for bluegill fly fishing. They look for cover and travel in groups. What this means is once you catch one you are bound to catch a whole lot more in the same area.
     Bluegills like to spawn in shallow water with a variety of bottom surfaces. They much prefer small gravel or even sand, but will go so far to lay eggs just about anywhere including heavily weeded areas.
     The males make nests. These nests can be a few inches deep and up to a foot wide. If you find a nest you can expect a lot of fish. Like other fish males nest with the eggs to protect them. During that time any fish or anything for that matter the gets near the eggs will most likely be attacked. Its not uncommon for a male bluegill to fend off attacking bass. . Bluegills spawn throughout the summer. So if you find a nest check back at that spot often.
     After spawning most bluegills move into deeper waters and back to structures they know and prefer. summer, if accompanied by a major temperature shift in the water, can also push fish into deeper waters.  Don't give up there are always going  to be some there and they will hit the fly.
